Assumption outlasts Columbus Catholic softball in wild finale

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic softball team came so close to its first win of the season in its regular-season finale Tuesday, but ran out of steam, falling 16-15 to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a nonconference game.

Columbus Catholic drops to 0-18, while Assumption improves to 2-14.

The Dons play a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Thursday at Pittsville.

Elizabeth Manlick went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Dons. Hannah Zarnke added two hits as Columbus had just seven hits, but took advantage of 10 walks.

Katelyn Welsh took the loss for the Dons, walking six and allowing 13 hits.
