Columbus Catholic boys basketball makes 15 3-pointers, cruise to eighth straight win

MARSHFIELD – Tyler Derfus drained seven 3-pointers, five in the first half, and scored 25 points in just three quarters to lead the Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team to a 69-49 rout of Gilman in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Tuesday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The Dons remain unbeaten in the Cloverbelt East at 6-0 and improve to 8-1 overall after their eighth straight win. Gilman falls to 1-7 and 0-7 in the conference. Combined with Greenwood’s loss to Augusta on Tuesday, the Dons move into sole possession of first place in the Cloverbelt East, one-half game ahead of Greenwood and Augusta.

Derfus hit four 3-pointers and a conventional basket for 14 points in the first quarter as the Dons took a 19-13 lead.

Alex Larson made two 3-pointers, and Derfus and Jared Fleischmann each added another in the second quarter, and Jacob Puent scored five points to push Columbus’ lead to 38-23 by halftime.

Columbus hit 15 3-pointers in the win, nine in the first half.

Fleischmann finished with 11 points and Larson and D.J. Cleveland each added nine.

Clay Hendricks scored 18 points and Lucas Lato had 17 for Gilman.

Columbus plays at Granton on Friday.
