WAUSAU – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County women’s basketball team overcame the odds throughout the season, playing with only five players at times, but on Saturday its season came to an abrupt end.

UW-Waukesha defeated the Marauders 95-88 in a shootout at the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference state tournament semifinals Saturday at UW-Marathon County.

Bailey Klieforth and Paige Albrecht each had double-doubles for the Marauders, who finish the season with a 17-8 record.

Klieforth had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Albrecht had 23 points nad 11 assists for UW-Marshfield. Marissa Draxler made 7 of 13 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and Heather Adrian added 15 points for the Marauders.

“We would get a lead they would come back. They would get a lead, we would come back. We just ended on the wrong side of the battle,” Marauders coach Rhonda Keding said. “I give credit to both teams. No one was going to quit.

“I am very proud of my girls. They worked hard all year and they had great dedication. They were coachable and the best part we had fun. I learned if you keep the fun in it for them you will get the return back. For this being my first year I am glad I had the team that I had. I will never forget them and we shared a lot of great memories not just on the court, but off.”
