Stratford boys basketball overcomes early deficit to knock off Abbotsford in Marawood Conference crossover

ABBOTSFORD – Stratford fell behind early but mounted a strong comeback and went on to beat Abbotsford 57-44 in the second-place game of the Marawood Conference Crossovers on Saturday afternoon at Abbotsford High School.

Abbotsford (10-12) led 15-10 after the first quarter before the Tigers (18-4) stormed back.

Stratford grabbed a 26-22 lead by halftime and pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 31-22 over the final 16 minutes.

Derek Austin scored 18 points, making 10 of 11 free throws, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Stratford.

Troy Mengel added 14 points and five rebounds and Nolan Bargender had nine points and six boards for Stratford.

The Tigers were 18 of 23 from the free throw line and 19 of 40 from the field in the win.

Shane Austin had 16 points and five rebounds for Abbotsford.

Stratford earned a first-round bye in the upcoming WIAA playoffs and will play the winner of Tuesday’s Marathon-Tri-County game in a regional semifinal at home on Friday.
