MADISON – Spencer senior Danny Schubert settled for sixth place after losing a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Alex Peters of West Salem/Bangor in a Division 2 160-pound fifth-place match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Schubert was pinned by Thurston Schuster (54-2) of Marshall in 2:50 of the first consolation match on Saturday, dropping into the fifth-place match.

Schubert was overpowered by Schuster, who gained a takedown midway through the first period and a reversal early in the second before flipping Schubert on his back and pinning him with 10 seconds to go in the second.

In the fifth-place match, Schubert (36-7) nearly had a had a takedown that would have given him the lead early in the third period but Peters (41-9) quickly reversed the action and gained control of Schubert and put him on his back for a nearfall, taking an 8-3 lead.

Schubert gained a reversal and was getting close to flipping Peters over when the referee stopped the match. Peters was treated for asthma with an inhaler – an unfortunate turn of events for Schubert.

Schubert gained another point for a stalling violation but was unable to get any nearfall points in the final 30 seconds.

“I was scoring some points and ended up getting the cradle locked up and getting ready to put him on his back and they called time,” Schubert said. “I didn’t understand why right away. To me, personally, it doesn’t feel like the right call to me. It’s the ref’s discretion and I allowed it to be in the ref’s discretion. I couldn’t enough points to get ahead.”

Although the tournament didn’t end the way he had hoped, losing his last three matches, Schubert said he was still happy with the bounce-back season he had.

Coming back from shoulder surgery, working his way to the state tournament and landing a spot on the podium is all he could have asked for in his senior season.

“Like I said before, we all come down to accomplish the same goal,” Schubert said. “We all want to get medals, if not the gold medal. Obviously I didn’t come out with the gold, I came out with a sixth-place medal, but I made it to the podium, I’m proud of myself. Coming off an injury, to me it’s a huge thing. I got to wrestle where I wanted this year, I felt comfortable. I got down here I just couldn’t pull it off. What are you going to do?”
