Assumption outlasts Auburndale in battle of Marawood South girls basketball leaders

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wisconsin Rapids Assumption held Auburndale to 32 percent shooting and remained undefeated with a 41-32 victory over the Apaches on Tuesday night at Assumption High School.

Assumption used a 15-5 second-quarter run to open up a 19-11 lead at halftime. The Apaches cut their deficit to five heading into the fourth, but couldn’t overcome it.

Assumption improves to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the Marawood Conference South Division. Auburndale drops to third-place in the conference at 6-2 (9-5 overall) and sees its four-game winning streak snapped.

Gena Grundhoffer scored 19 points to lead the Royals. She made 6 of 7 shots from the field and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. Mary Sigler added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Melanie Brandl had 10 points, and Nicole Nikolay had a team-high 10 rebounds for Auburndale.

The Apaches play at Wausau Newman Catholic on Friday. That game will be broadcast on WOSQ-FM 92.3 and on wdlbwosq.com with pregame starting at 7:15 p.m.
