WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield girls soccer team earned its first point of the Wisconsin Valley Conference season with a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.

Hanna Kiiskila scored off an assist from Kendra Lynse at the 24:25 mark of the first half to give Rapids (3-1-1, 2-1-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) an early 1-0 lead.

The Raiders’ lead held until 15:07 into the second half when Marshfield junior Darian Molter scored on an assist from Maddie Smith to knot the game at 1-1.

Marshfield outshot Wisconsin Rapids 17-13 in the game, but couldn’t get another one past Raiders’ goalie Sophie Hardina (11 saves).

“We had some great opportunities but could not get the last pass or shot to go in, or even get off a shot,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said.

Courtney Thumann had 12 saves in goal for the Tigers (1-3-1, 0-2-1 WVC) in her first varsity start. Thumann made a big save in overtime against an open Rapids attacker.

“That save allowed us to stay even in the game and was just an outstanding save for a new keeper,” Lindner said.

Marshfield has 10 games scheduled during the next two weeks, starting with a Wisconsin Valley Conference game at Merrill on Monday and its home opener Tuesday against Wausau West.

Lindner said it is up to him and assistant coach Jeff Molter to “step it up” during this busy portion of the season.

“We are not all on the same page and our jobs will be to move the team forward and believe in themselves,” Lindner said. “There is too much talent to not be successful, but we need to do our job to assist them.”
