ANTIGO – For the first time this year, the Auburndale girls basketball team gave up less than 40 points and didn’t win – and it cost the Apaches their season.

Gillett (23-3) came back from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Apaches 38-33 in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal Thursday night at Antigo High School. Auburndale wraps up its first season under coach Corey Manlick with a 19-7 record, while Gillett moves on to play Brillion (25-1) in a secitonal final Saturday at De Pere.

“The girls have nothing to be ashamed of. They gave a great effort,” Manlick said. “It was a good first year, a great experience coaching.”

Auburndale led by seven with 5:30 left before Gillett cut down the lead and surged ahead in the final minutes.

“The girls played a real physical game. It was a game of streaks,” Manlick said. “They widdled the lead away, we got some ticky-tack fouls called on us on our press, but that’s the way it goes. It was a great season.”
