AUBURNDALE – Stratford grabbed a share of the Marawood Conference football title with a 26-12 win over Auburndale on Friday night at Auburndale High School.
The Tigers (8-1, 7-1 Marawood) tied Edgar and Marathon for the conference championship. It is Stratford’s first since 2007 when it won its fifth straight championship.
Auburndale finishes the regular season with a 4-5 record and a 4-4 mark in the Marawood. The Apaches will play Algoma (8-0) at Southern Door High School in Brussels in a WIAA Division 6 Level 1 game Friday at 7 p.m.
Stratford will play at Marathon (8-1) in a WIAA Division 5 Level 1 game Friday at 7 p.m.
Davis Drews ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and Michael Bargender threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns to Joe Redman and Eli Temanson to account for Stratford’s scoring.
The Tigers led 14-12 at halftime and Redman scored on a 50-yard pass from Bargender and Drews ran in from 11 yards away. Auburndale had a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Blake Anderson, and Anderson tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Matt Nikolay, but the Apaches missed both extra points and trailed at the half.
Stratford’s defense put the clamps down in the second half, keeping Auburndale scoreless. Drews had a 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Temanson caught a 30-yard scoring pass from Bargender to make it 26-12.
Redman finished with five catches for 103 yards for Stratford.
Anderson was 16 of 28 for 191 yards passing for Auburndale. Isaac Castellano had six catches for 79 yards and Nikolay finished with five catches for 70 yards.
