MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team took first-place D.C. Everest to the wire but couldn’t muster a run against Brooke Gajewski and lost 1-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday at Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.

Gajewski struck out seven, didn’t walk a batter and allowed just two hits to earn the win. She also went 2-for-3 and drove in the only run of the game.

Miranda Baierl struck out five and walked two, giving up only three hits for the Tigers (9-13, 4-7 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Everest is now 18-3 and 10-1 in the conference.

“Miranda pitched an outstanding game tonight, only giving up three hits to a team of that caliber,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “Our defense also did a great job behind her making big plays to keep them off the bases. Unfortunately our offense could not get going, but part of that is also that Brooke Gajewski is a great pitcher and she has been doing that all season for them.”

Marshfield wraps up its WVC schedule at home Thursday against Stevens Point, which is tied with Everest for the conference lead. The Tigers finish their regular season with a nonconference doubleheader Friday against La Crosse Logan.
