Stratford boys basketball tops Athens for third-straight win

ATHENS – Derrick Schmidt had 24 points and nine rebounds and Ethan Nagel nailed five 3-pointers and added 20 points as the Stratford boys basketball team won its third-straight game with a 69-56 nonconference victory over Athens on Tuesday night at Athens High School.

Stratford shot 48 percent (24 of 49) and made 8 of 23 shots from 3-point range, including 5-for-9 from Nagel. Schmidt and Nagel combined to make 17 of 28 shots from the field overall.

The Tigers (12-9) also made 13 of 16 free throws in the win.

Stratford will wrap up its regular-season schedule at Prentice in the fifth-place game of the Marawood Conference North-South crossovers on Thursday. The Tigers open WIAA Division 4 playoff action March 1 at home against Coleman in a regional quarterfinal.
