Marshfield boys hockey drops regular-season finale to Wausau West

MARSHFIELD – Wausau West clinched a share of the Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey championship with an 8-4 victory over Marshfield on Thursday at the Marshfield Area Ice Arena.

West scored four goals in the first period and pulled out to a six-goal lead midway through the third period before Marshfield scored twice late.

Wausau West (15-6-2 overall) shares the WVC title with Stevens Point for the second year in a row as both finish 9-1 in conference play. West has won or shared the Valley title in nine of the past 11 seasons.

Marshfield finishes the regular season with an 11-13 record and a 1-9 mark in the WVC.

Sam Techel had three goals and two assists, and Marc Sippel scored twice and had two assists for the Warriors.

Isaac Wellens scored twice, and Max Heller and Evan Weister had goals for Marshfield. Ryan Krueger assistsed on all four of the Tigers’ scores.

Marshfield will have a week off before opening WIAA postseason action with a regional final at Ashland (15-7) on Feb. 15. Marshfield won at home against Ashland in a nonconference game 4-3 on Jan. 6.
