Spencer boys basketball storms back late to top Loyal

LOYAL – The Spencer boys basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Loyal 52-49 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Thursday night at Loyal High School.

Loyal led by 13 in the second half before the Rockets mounted a comeback. Brett Kasch, who sat out much of the first half in foul trouble, scored twice late to give Spencer the lead for the first time with less than one minute to go.

Austin Bacon added some key free throws for the Rockets as they held on at the end.

Bacon made 10 of 11 free throws overall and finished with a team-high 21 points for Spencer. Kasch added 14 and Eric Elhert made three 3-pointers to score 11 for the Rockets.

With the win, Spencer remains one game behind Neillsville for the lead in the Cloverbelt East standings. Spencer is now 13-4 overall and 12-1 in conference play. The Rockets will host Owen-Withee on Friday and Neillsville (16-2, 13-0 Cloverbelt East) on Tuesday.

Daymain Baird led Loyal (8-10, 5-8 Cloverbelt East) with 18 points.
