RIB MOUNTAIN – Auburndale’s Danica Harrison repeated her Marawood Conference cross country title, but the Apaches couldn’t do quite enough to knock off perennial powerhouse Edgar on Thursday at Nine Mile Forest Recreation Area.

Harrison pulled away from the field after the mile mark and cruised to a 15-second win over Edgar’s Lizzie Pospyhalla. Edgar’s Kira Dittman was a distant third in 16:37.1.

Three other Auburndale runners placed in the top 12 – Sam Karl was sixth in 16:42.3, Emma Steines was 10th in 17:11.8 and Heather Nigh took 12th in 17:14.8 – but the Apaches couldn’t overcome all five Edgar runners finishing in the top 11 as the Wildcats won their 14th straight Marawood Conference girls team championship.

“The girls ran well and were able to take second as a team, but Edgar was just too tough and they ran a super race to win their 14th title in a row,” Auburndale coach Jim Johnson said.

Stratford finished last out of the nine teams competing, led by Hannah Strickland’s 25th-place finish in 18:11.2.

Stratford’s Matt Zuelke took fifth in 17:19.3, finishing 34 seconds off the lead. Alex Faber of Edgar won the boys title in 16:45.3, 14.4 seconds ahead of Chequamegon’s Alex Barbeln. Marathon’s Andrew Studinski was third in 17:02.5.

Chequamegon placed three in the top six and five runners in the top 19 to take the boys team title. Marathon was second, Auburndale was fifth and Stratford ended up seventh.

David Haas took 10th for Auburndale, finishing in 17:51.0. Freshman Luke Haas was 14th in 18:05.3.

“The boys got caught up in a fast start and faded a little down the stretch,” Johnson said. “David Haas ran his best race of the year to place 10th.”
