Marshfield’s Varsho moves on, Columbus’ Manlick ousted at WIAA state tennis

MADISON – Marshfield junior Taylor Varsho won her first-round match in Division 1 singles Thursday at the WIAA State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.

Varsho beat Lexie Weigand of Fort Atkinson in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, (7-4) to advance. Varsho (22-8) will take on Karin Naslund (26-4) of Oshkosh West at 8:30 a.m. Friday in a second-round matchup.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic sophomore Elizabeth Manlick, who reached the second round at last year’s state tournament, lost her first-round match this time around, 7-5, 6-3, to Jenna Zimmerman of Racine St. Catherine’s.
