Columbus Catholic softball powers past Colby/Abbotsford

COLBY – The Columbus Catholic softball team wrapped up third place in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division with a 13-3 win over Colby/Abbotsford on Tuesday at Colby High School.

The Dons scored eight runs in the fourth inning to bust open a scoreless game and cruised from there behind pitcher Hailey Zimmermann, who struck out 11 and walked three in a complete game.

Cierra Dieringer had a home run and four RBI, Zimmermann had three hits and an RBI, and Sam Casperson had two hits and an RBI for Columbus Catholic (11-7, 8-4 Cloverbelt East).

Halie VanLuven had three of Colby/Abbotsford’s six hits. The Hornets finish the regular season at 5-8 overall and 5-7 in the Cloverbelt East.

Colby/Abbotsford will play a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal at Rhinelander on Thursday.

Columbus Catholic will open postseason play with a Division 5 regional semifinal at Thorp on May 24.
