Marshfield wrestling earns three top-seven finishes, takes 13th at Cheesehead Invitational

KAUKAUNA – The Marshfield wrestling team had three individuals earn top-seven finishes and ended up 13th at the highly-competitive Cheesehead Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Kaukauna High School.

Marshfield finished 13th among 39 teams at the tournament with 247 points. Simley (Minn.) racked up 509 points to claim the team title.

Hoyt Blaskowski went 5-3 at 145 pounds to take fourth place, Marshifeld’s highest individual finish. Blaskowski went 3-1 in round-robin competition, suffering his first loss of the season. He returned to win his quarterfinal match by pin before losing in the semifinals. After a wrestleback victory, Blaskowski (26-3) lost to Nathan VandeHey of Freedom 8-0 in the third-place match.

Brett Franklin (24-5) finished sixth at 138 pounds, going 4-3 in the two-day tournament for the Tigers. He lost in the quarterfinals before winning 3-0 in a wrestleback, but lost in the fifth-place match.

Garrett Willuweit (24-5) earned a seventh-place finish at 160 pounds, going 4-2. He won the seventh-place match over Vristol Short of Simley, 6-2.

Caleb Dennee (24-5) took ninth place at 152, Owen Griesbach (24-5) was 11th at 170, and Jon Sternweis (17-1) finished 13th at 106 for the Tigers.

Marshfield will host a pair of dual meets on Thursday, taking on D.C. Everest and Stevens Point, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
