Welch wins title as Auburndale wrestling takes 11th at Freedom Invitational

FREEDOM – Senior Sloan Welch picked up another tournament title as the Auburndale wrestling team finished 11th at the 16-team Freedom Irish Invitational on Saturday at Freedom High School.

Welch improved to 30-1 as he won the 285-pound title, pinning Hunter VanderHeiden of Freedom in the championship match in 3:10.

Auburndale also picked up three other place winners. Derek Godard (28-5) placed third at 106, beating Blake Frey of Evansville 10-2 in the third-place match; Colton Weiler (29-4) was second at 132 pounds, losing in the finals to Danny Heiser of Evansville 10-3; and Zade Grassel (20-10) took sixth at 120 for the Eagles.

Auburndale will compete at a Marawood Conference quadrangular at Edgar on Thursday and at the Wausau East Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 21.
