HORTONVILLE – The sixth-seeded Marshfield girls basketball team hung with No. 3 seed Hortonville for 20 minutes, leading for much of it, but a long scoring drought sunk the Tigers.

Hortonville, which has been one of the top-ranked teams in the state throughout most of the season, used a 15-0 run in the second half to pull past Marshfield 61-43 in a WIAA Division 1 regional final Saturday night at Hortonville High School.

Marshfield led by five at two different times in the first half before the teams traded barbs over the final four minutes.

Ashley Grancorvitz hit a 3-pointer with 3:40 to go for Marshfield only to see Rainey Welson counter for Hortonville.

After a Dani Minsaas basket for the Tigers, Hortonville’s Mikayla Werner hit another 3 and tied it again with 1 minute left.

Ayana Bousum made two free throws for Marshfield in the final minute of the half and the Tigers took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

Two early 3-pointers from the Polar Bears gave them the lead before Grancorvitz hit another one to put the Tigers up 34-33 with 15:50 remaining in the game. Then, all of a sudden, Marshfield’s offense went silent.

The Tigers went more than six minutes without a point as numerous turnovers halted their momentum. Hortonville took advantage, scoring 15-straight points to take control. Welson and Kyra Funk had 3-pointers in the run as the Polar Bears surged ahead 48-34.

Raella Schueller ended the run with a basket inside, but the Tigers could not mount a comeback and trailed by double digits the rest of the way.

Grancorvitz had 14 points and Minsaas finished with 11 for the Tigers.

Welson led Hortonville with 20 points.

Marshfield finishes its season with a 20-6 record, its first 20-win season since 2017.

Hortonville (23-3) moves on to a sectional semifinal against No. 7 seed Wausau West (18-8) on Thursday at Oshkosh North. West upset No. 2 seed Superior 64-61 in a regional final on Saturday. Neenah (25-1) will play Eau Claire Memorial (19-6) in the other sectional semifinal Thursday, with the winners meeting in a sectional final next Saturday, March 4, at Appleton East.
