Marshfield wins two events, finishes fifth at 2023 Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Swimming Meet

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Stevens Point won five events and earned the team title at the 2023 Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Swimming Meet on Thursday at Lincoln High School, securing its third-straight WVC championship.

Stevens Point won the meet with 541 points, with D.C. Everest second with 505.5 and Merrill a distant third with 251. Marshfield ended up fifth with 231 and tied for fifth in the overall season standings, which combines the conference meet and dual meet schedule, with Wausau West.

Marshfield won two events and had four runner-up finishes.

Ireland Moran won the conference title in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 25.34 seconds, and Brooke Begotka earned a victory in the 100 breaststroke, swimming in 1L09.30.

Begotka also finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.69), Terra Risa was the runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:18.29), and the two were part of two Marshfield relay teams that also placed second.

Moran, Begotka, Risa and Ella Allar finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:53.60), and Moran, Shiloh Smiht, Risa and Begotka took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.93).

Risa added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:02.61) and Moran finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:01.34) as well for the Tigers.

Marshfield will be back at Wisconsin Rapids to take part in the WIAA Division 1 sectional meet on Nov. 4.

Marshfield’s Sam Bowe was named Coach of the Year and Olivia Schjoneman of Wausau East was selected as the Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Swimmer of the Year by the conference coaches.
