Two six-run innings propel Assumption past Auburndale baseball

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – For three innings, the Auburndale baseball team was locked in a battle with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.

The Royals then exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to beat Auburndale 13-3 in five innings in a Marawood Conference South Division game Thursday.

The loss is Auburndale’s fifth straight and drops the Apaches to 2-8, 1-6 in the Marawood South. Assumption improves to 3-6 and 3-4 in conference action.

Auburndale pitcher Rhys Wahleithner was cruising along until the fourth, when the Royals touched him for six runs, all earned. He gave up another in the fifth before being replaced by Austin Hawkins, who allowed the other five (two earned). Wahleithner finished with nine strikeouts and two walks, allowing just five hits. Auburndale had five errors in the game.

Nick Burtrock struck out six and walked three to earn the complete-game victory. He also added two hits, including a triple.

Auburndale returns to action Friday at Wausau Newman Catholic.
