MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team won for the third time in its first four Wisconsin Valley Conference games of the season, routing Wausau East 12-0 in five innings on Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.

Elliot Ashbeck threw a five-inning no-hitter and Josh Lutz had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs to lead the Tigers.

Ashbeck struck out four and did not walk a batter to earn the no-hitter. Only one East batter reached base, that coming on an error in the second inning.

Ashbeck also went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored at the plate for Marshfield.

The Tigers improve to 3-7 overall and 3-1 in the WVC, one game behind unbeaten Rhinelander for the top spot in the conference standings. Rhinelander beat Wausau West 14-8 on Thursday.

Lutz cracked a two-run home run to cap off a four-run third inning.

Marshfield broke the game open early, scoring seven times on six hits in the second inning. Nick Anderson, Brendan Voss, Sully Luepke and Lutz knocked in runs, and Brett Baur plated a pair with a triple.

Wausau East falls to 3-7, 0-4 in the Valley.

Marshfield plays a nonconference doubleheader at Merrill on Saturday and is back in action in Valley play next Thursday at Wausau West.
