MENOMONIE – The Marshfield wrestling team’s bid for another trip to the state team tournament was thwarted as Hudson earned a pin in the final match to edge the Tigers 37-36 in a WIAA Division 1 Team Wrestling Sectional semifinal Tuesday at Menomonie High School.
Hudson won one match by forfeit and four by pin, including one by Ethan Winkelman over James Clements 19 seconds into the second period of the 215-pound match to close out the victory for the Raiders.
Menomonie defeated Hudson 43-24 in the championship match to qualify for its first-ever state team tournament. The 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held March 1-2 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison.
Marshfield led 17-6 after pins by Brok Carolfi at 285 and Jon Sternweis at 120, and a technical fall win by Todd Gurney at 113.
Menomonie ripped off five-straight wins, including three by pin, before Marshfield hit the meat of its lineup.
A 10-1 major decision by Grayden Rode at 157, followed by pins from Haiden Carlson (165) and Caleb Dennee (175), and a 7-5 victory by Owen Griesbach at 190 put the Tigers on top 36-31, but Winkelman’s pin gave Hudson the one-point victory in the final match of the dual.
Marshfield will host a WIAA Division 1 individual sectional on Saturday as 13 of its wrestlers will participate for a chance to make it to next week’s state tournament in Madison. The top two finishers in each weight class qualify for state.
