MADISON – Four local wrestlers will be battling for state titles on Saturday night after winning semifinal matches at the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Friday at the Kohl Center.
A number of area wrestlers also are guaranteed top-six state medals and will take part in consolation matches on Saturday afternoon.
The championship round will start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and will be broadcast locally on WAOW-TV 9.2 and at waow.com.
Marshfield junior Ava Gardner advanced to the girls 100-pound championship bout with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Iszy Sonnentag of Cadott. Gardner (26-1) will take on undefeated Brooke Corrigan (12-0) of De Pere for the state title.
On the boys side, Marshfield junior Caleb Dennee (53-0) won his Division 1 165-pound semifinal with a tight 9-7 victory over Caleb Cady (54-3) of Pewaukee to advance to a championship matchup against another undefeated wrestler, Liam Crook (38-0) of Kaukauna.
In Division 3, Auburndale’s Colton Weiler and Stratford’s Carter Lueck advanced to the finals.
Weiler (51-1) pinned Jordan Jahnke of Shiocton in his 144-pound semifinal and moves on to a championship matchup against Ian Crapp (29-5) of Fennimore.
At 175 pounds, Lueck (51-1) held off Nash Banko of Oostburg 11-9 and will take on La Crosse Aquinas’ David Malin (41-2) for the title.
A pair of Auburndale wrestlers and one from Stratford lost their semifinal matches.
Auburndale’s Derek Godard (48-6) was pinned in 1:58 by Kenosha Christian Life’s Drew Dolphin in a 113-pound semifinal, while teammate Zade Grassel (43-11) lost 10-2 to Glenwood City’s Wyatt Unser (51-0) at 126.
Stratford’s Aaron Knetter (36-15) lost his 126-pound semifinal to Brody Miess of Riverdale, 1-0. All three move into the consolation semifinals.
Marshfield’s Owen Griesbach at 175 pounds in Division 1, and Stratford’s Trenton Cournoyer (120) and Noah Lucio (190) in Division 3 guaranteed themselves state medals and will also wrestle in consolation matches. With a win, they will wrestle for third place and if they lose, for fifth.
