MERRILL – The Marshfield baseball team finally was able to hit the field for its season opener on Tuesday at Merrill and scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 10-9 victory in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup.

Dawson Meissner and Caleb Schaefer had RBI singles in the Tigers’ final at-bat.

Marshfield took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Adam Gilbertson knocked in two with a single and Meissner followed with another RBI hit.

Merrill pulled ahead 6-3 before Marshfield regained the lead at 8-6 on an RBI single by Braden Anderson.

The Bluejays again rallied, taking a 9-8 lead into the seventh before the Tigers’ rally.

Owen Griesbach sent Merrill down in order in the bottom of the frame to save the win for reliever Bryce Schade, who struck out four in three innings.

Chase Robinson, Gilbertson, Meissner, Caleb Schaefer and Anderson each had three hits for Marshfield, which finished with 20 overall. Schaefer and Meissner both drove in three.

The two teams will play again Thursday at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield.
