Spencer girls basketball edges Altoona in Cloverbelt Crossover 2nd-place game

OSSEO – The Spencer girls basketball team heads into the WIAA playoffs as hot as it could be.

The Rockets, behind 16 points by Kyleigh Hebert, defeated Altoona 33-31 in the second-place game of the Cloverbelt Conference Crossovers on Saturday at Osseo-Fairchild High School. The win is Spencer’s 10th straight and it finishes the regular season with a 19-3 record.

Spencer used a 12-5 second quarter to take a 20-12 lead into halftime only to see Altoona storm ahead by outscoring them 14-4 in the third quarter.

The Rockets responded with a 9-5 fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Krystal Weier added nine points and four rebounds, and Tara Matter had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who have a first-round bye and host the winner of Tuesday’s Rib Lake-Greenwood game on Thursday, March 10, at Spencer High School.

Kayla Springer led Altoona (15-7) with 12 points.
