Edgar upsets Auburndale in WIAA Division 4 girls basketball sectional semifinal

WAUSAU – Auburndale’s dream season came to an end as Marawood Conference rival Edgar pulled off a stunning upset in a WIAA Division 4 girls basketball sectional semifinal Thursday night at Wausau East High School.ut

The Apaches defeated Edgar twice during the regular season – once by 15 points and the other by 16 – but couldn’t make it a hat trick and fell to the Wildcats 47-42.

Edgar (15-9) will play Oshkosh Lourdes or Algoma in a sectional final on Saturday at Waupaca with a WIAA State Tournament berth on the line. Auburndale’s season ends with a 21-4 record after having its six-game win streak snapped.

Auburndale led 13-11 after the first quarter, but trailed by one at 21-20 at halftime. Edgar held off the Apaches in a tight game in the fourth quarter, making eight straight free throws in the final 48 seconds.

Lindsay Gotz hit a long jumper for Auburndale to cut Edgar’s lead to 39-37 with 48 seconds to go before Tessa Thurs made a pair of free throws. After an Auburndale miss, Jena Heidmann added two more from the line for the Wildcats.

Kelly Tomforhde, who had 15 points for the Apaches, had a three-point play with 20 seconds to go to cut it back to three at 43-40, but Ashley Schneeberger and Kira Dittman each made two free throws in the final 19 seconds and Auburndale managed just one basket, but Liz Breu with 5 seconds left.

Breu, who finished her incredible career as Auburndale’s all-time leading scorer, had 15 points to end her senior with 1,210 career points.
