Spencer seventh-graders win Wisconsin State Invitational boys basketball tournament

The Spencer seventh-grade boys basketball team won the Division 4/5 championship at the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in La Crosse on April 2-3.

The tournament was organized by The Great Northwest Basketball League and 92 teams competed in four divisions.

In pool play, Spencer defeated Mishicot 43-31 and Cuba City 55-45 before losing to Howards Grove 45-41. The 2-1 record was good enough to qualify for the quarterfinals, where it beat Melrose-Mindoro 40-37.

Spencer went on to beat Colfax 37-22 in the semifinals and Shiocton 37-34 in overtime to win the championship.

The Spencer team is coached by Steve Pilz and assistant coach Ed Andreae. Calvin Lenz and Bobby Pilz of Spencer were both named to the All-Tournament team for Division 4/5, along with: Tyler Biadasz (Amherst), Devon Christopherson (Melrose-Mindoro), Devin Gallenberger (Howards Grove), Derrick Grimm (Howards Grove), Gage Kamp (Shiocton), and Zach Meyer (Colfax).

The Spencer Rockets ended their season with a record of 33-8 and have an 80-16 record since fifth grade.
