Columbus baseball starts strong but can’t stop surging Spencer

SPENCER – Marshfield Columbus Catholic got off to a quick lead by couldn’t hold it and dropped its season opener to Spencer 16-5 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division baseball game Friday at Spencer High School.

The Dons jumped on Spencer with four runs in the top of the first inning only to see Spencer respond with a five-run bottom to take the lead for good.

The Rockets added three runs in both the second and third innings, and scored five more in the fourth to go on to the win in 4½ innings, due to the 10-run rule.

Charlie Mayeux had two hits and six others added singles for Columbus, but the Dons struck out nine times and couldn’t muster a run after the second inning.

Spencer had just four hits but took advantage of 18 walks by three Columbus pitchers.

Statistics for Spencer (2-0) were not provided.

Columbus Catholic is scheduled to play a nonconference doubleheader at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Saturday and return to Cloverbelt East action Tuesday at Neillsville.

Spencer plays at Loyal on Monday and at Colby on Tuesday before hosting Augusta on Thursday.
