SPENCER – The Spencer softball team opened the new SPREC Field with a monumental victory, knocking off defending Cloverbelt Conference East Division champion Neillsville 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Rockets won their seventh straight game and maintained their lead in the Cloverbelt East, improving to 8-1 overall and in the conference. Neillsville falls to 5-5 and 5-4 in the Cloverbelt East.

Paige Johnson had a double and an RBI, Erika Taylor smoked a home run and Danica Johnson knocked in a run with a single to provide Spencer with all the scoring it would need.

Nicole Bruss tossed a two-hitter, striking out three and walking one in the complete-game victory for the Rockets.

“It was a night of firsts,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “In my five years in Spencer it is the first time I witnessed a Spencer softball team beat Neillsville, Erika Taylor hit the first home run I have seen a Spencer girl hit, and we opened our new field up with a win.”

Alyssa Anding had a double and scored for Neillsville.

Spencer is off until Saturday when it hosts the Spencer Invitational.
