Three local athletes qualify for state meet in two events at WIAA Division 3 track sectional at Rosholt

ROSHOLT – Auburndale’s Danica Harrison, Stratford’s Matt Zuelke and Spencer’s Marcie Hebert each qualified for the state track meet in two events by placing in the top four at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Meet on Thursday at Rosholt High School.

The trio will be among the large group of local athletes that will compete at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on June 3-4.

Extra qualifiers, those placing in the top eight statewide, will be announced Friday.

Harrison, Zuelke and Hebert each won an event and placed second in another to secure a spot at the state meet.

Harrison won the girls 1,600 meters in 5:23.73 and was second in the 3,200 in 12:01.35. Danielle Leffel of Stratford was seventh in the 1,600 and teammate Megan Skwierczynski took fifth in the 3,200.

Auburndale also had two additional girls qualify for the state meet. Freshman Lakisha Sutton took third in the 200 meters, running in 27.23 seconds, and senior Kelly Tomfohrde took third in the pole vault (9 feet, 6 inches). Tomfohrde failed to qualify in the long jump, taking 12th.

Zuelke was one of two individuals and two relay teams to qualify for the Stratford boys team.

Zuelke won the 3,200 in 10:08.91 and placed second in the 1,600 in 4:35.19. Aaron Swensen of Auburndale was 15th in the 3,200 (11:27.61).

Zuelke will be joined at state by Jake Griffith, who was second in the pole vault (13-0), the 800 relay team of Austin Shelley, Eli Temanson, Mark Marquardt and Nick Viegut (fourth in 1:36.11 and the 400 relay team of Dylan Kell, Temanson, Phil Sersch and Viegut (second in 45.87).

Sersch (200), Marquardt (high jump) and the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams failed to qualify for Stratford.

Hebert won the girls discus with a toss of 124 feet, 7 inches, and was third in the shot put (36-1.75) as the senior qualified in both events. Tracy Arnes of Stratford was 14th in the discus (86-8).

Auburndale’s C.J. Castellano was the only other local boy to qualify for the state meet. He took second in the high jump with a leap of 5-11. His brother, Isaac Castellano, placed 13th in the high jump and seventh in the 800 meters.

The Spencer relay team of Rudy Nieman, Josh Miller, Josh Olson and Austin Mueller failed to qualify in any of its three races, taking 12th in the 800 relay, and 15th in the 400 relay and the 1,600 relay. Olson took ninth in the triple jump as the Rockets were shutout of the state meet.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic also failed to gain an entry into the state meet.

Travis Wienke took 15th in the 400, the 3,200 relay team of David Clevleand, Wienke, Travis Pischel and Tyler Derfus took fifth, and Cleveland was 10th and Pischel took 16th in the 800 meters.

Auburndale’s Tom Sabel did not qualify for the finals in the 100 meters and teammate Jake Hansen was 11th in the shot put.

The Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Stratford girls each had a relay team that will move on to state.

The Columbus 400 relay team of Mariah Heiman, Lindsey Brandt, Abigal Gotz and Kayla Selz finished fourth in 52.57 seconds, while the Stratford 800 relay team of Brooke Schultze, Abby Bender, Josie Kolbeck and Toshia Spindler was fourth in 1:51.74.

The same group of Columbus girls took fifth in the 800 relay and the Dons’ 3,200 relay team of Riley Roehl, Nikki Hertel, Claire Pinter, Deanna Kaiser also finished fifth.
