Marshfield sophomore, freshman football teams edge Oshkosh West, Ben Franklin

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield sophomore and freshman football teams posted close victories on Thursday.

The sophomore team needed double overtime to knock off Oshkosh West 21-14, and the Tigers’ freshman team edged Stevens Point Ben Franklin 20-12.

Colton Zahradka tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Devin Zahradka in the second overtime to lead the Marshfield sophomores to the victory.

The game was tied 6-6 after four quarters and each team scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the first overtime.

Keiron Howlett, who finished with 115 yards rushing on 24 carries, had a 3-yard touchdown run and Colton Zahradka hit Andy Wittman for a two-point conversion to tie the game in overtime for the Tigers.

Devin Zahradka caught a 10-yard touchdown from Colton Zahradka in the first quarter for the first score of the game.

Craig Zalizniak, Matt Rickman, Mitch Ott and Daulton Varsho led the Marshfield defense in tackles. Zach Meissner had a pair of fumble recoveries and Carsten Lovestad and Rickman each had interceptions.

Trevor Hieman had an 8-yard touchdown run, Mitch Zillman had a 56-yard TD, Derek Coeffren threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Boson and Jack Donahue kicked two extra points to supply the scoring for the Marshfield freshman team in its win over Ben Franklin.

Zillman, Trevor Neufeld and Devon Klement were the leading tacklers for the Tigers. Cameron Swanson had two of Marshfield’s five interceptions. Zillman, Sam Klein and Jordan Spindler each added another.

Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 29.
