Paige Albrecht scores 27 points in both games to lead UW-Marshfield/Wood County women to Fond du Lac Tournament title

FOND DU LAC – If the first few days of the season is any indication, the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County women’s basketball team looks like a squad on the rise.

Following a disappointing 7-15 record last year, the Marauders have rolled to three straight wins to start the 2011-12 season after a pair of wins the tournament championship at the UW-Fond du Lac Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Marauders beat UW-Fond du Lac 73-51 on Friday then crushed Milwaukee Area Technical College 76-51 in the championship game Saturday to improve to 3-0.

On Saturday, reigning Wisconsin College Conference Player of the Year Paige Albecht, a 2010 graduate of Marshfield Columbus Catholic High School, scored 27 points and had seven assists in the victory. Ashley Pongratz added 23 points and 11 rebounds, Marissa Draxler scored 14 points and Bailey Klieforth grabbed 11 boards for Marshfield.

Albrecht also scored 27 points in the win on Friday. Pongratz had 13 points, Klieforth added 12 and Heather Adrian had 14 rebounds for the Marauders.

UW-Marshfield/Wood County is back in action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against UW-Washington County.
