Stratford girls basketball wins on road at Edgar

EDGAR – The Stratford girls basketball team continued its great start to the 2011-12 season with a 56-42 road win at Edgar in a Marawood Conference South Division game Tuesday night.

The Tigers improve to 4-1 and 3-1 in the Marawood South with the victory.

Brooke Schultz made 7 of 8 shots and scored 18 points to lead the Tigers. She also had eight rebounds.

Carrie Stroetz added 14 points and six rebounds and Hannah Schmitt had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Stratford, which made 18 of 24 free throws in the win.

Stratford steadily pulled ahead throughout the game, outscoring Edgar in each quarter. The Tigers led 10-6 after the first quarter and 31-22 by halftime. Stratford built its lead to double digits in the third, outscoring the Wildcats 17-10.

Faryn Wirkus had 20 points and nine rebounds for Edgar (3-3, 1-3 Marawood South).

Stratford will compete in the Almond-Bancroft Tournament next Wednesday and Thursday.
