Spencer softball uses 8-run inning to blow past Stratford

STRATFORD – The Spencer softball team used an eight-run third inning to pull ahead early and rolled to a 15-4 nonconference win over Stratford on Monday.

Nine different Rockets had hits and eight players scored at least a run in the win, moving Spencer’s record to 2-1. Stratford falls to 1-1.

Paige Johnson, Marisa Johnson, Tynae Phillips and Courtney Schulz each had two hits and Paige Johnson scored three times and knocked in three runs for Spencer. Schulz added three RBIs.

Phillips allowed three hits and three walks, while striking out two in the five-inning complete-game win. All four of the runs allowed were unearned.

Spencer scored eight times in the third inning, added two more in the fourth and closed out the game with five in the fifth.

Stratford hosts Marathon and Spencer plays at Loyal on Tuesday.

Hannah Schmitt had two hits and two RBIs for Stratford.
