KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Samuel Mitchell, a fifth grader from Nasonville Elementary School, was asked to join the Illinois National Youth Wrestling Team to take part in the AAU 2012 Elementary School National Duals.

The tournament was held in Kingsport, Tenn., last Friday, Saturday and Sunday with teams of the best elementary wrestlers from all over the country.

Mitchell and his team won the national championship team title with a 43-40 win over Iowa Black on Sunday. Iowa had won the tournament the previous eight years.

Each wrestler was awarded a gold medal for the team accomplishment, and Mitchell was among those to receive a bronze medal after he only lost two matches the entire tournament, and was named as an individual All-American.

The team was made up of 20 weight classes of elementary school wrestlers starting at 40 pounds up to heavyweight at 220 pounds. Mitchell wrestled in the 135 weight class.
