GREENWOOD – Spencer broke open a tie game with a six-run third inning and powered past Greenwood 13-5 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball game Friday.

Spencer led 5-0 before Greenwood tied the game with a five-run bottom of the second. The Rockets countered with six runs in the third and added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to grab their fifth straight win.

Marisa Johnson went 3-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Rockets’ attack. Brooke Kettleborough, Sam Nikolay and Courtney Schulz each added two hits and Schultz drove in three runs for Spencer.

Krystal Weier added a two-run home run in the second inning for Spencer (6-1, 4-1 Cloverbelt East).

“Both pitchers (Tynae Phillips and Heidi Guenther) threw very well and we were solid on defense all around,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “Krystal’s home run was an absolute rocket right off the bat.”

Gorst said Phillips had a great catch in right field during the sixth inning.

Riley Johnson had two bunt singles and score a run for Greenwood (3-5, 3-3 Cloverbelt East).

Spencer will play in the Marshfield Tournament at the Marshfield Fairgounds on Saturday along with La Crosse Logan and Tomahawk. Games start at 9:30 a.m. The Rockets return to Cloverbelt action Tuesday at Gilman.
