Spencer’s Rachel Zastrow, Stratford boys 800, Columbus girls 800 relay teams earn medals at WIAA State Track Meet

LA CROSSE – One individual and a pair of relays teams from the area earned medals Saturday at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Spencer freshman Rachel Zastrow, the only Rocket at the state meet, took fifth place in the pole vault (9 feet, 9 inches) to earn a Division 3 state medal.

Also in Division 3, the Stratford boys 800 relay team of Dylan Kell, Kellen Bornbach, Eli Temanson and Jake Guyer finished sixth in 1:33.07. The Tigers team qualified seventh, but were able to move up a spot to grab a state medal.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s 800 girls relay team of Rachael Roehl, Hannah Stratman, Kayla Selz, and Mariah Heiman qualified sixth and moved up two spots in the finals Saturday to finish fourth in 1:48.34.

Also competing Saturday were a number of athletes who did not earn top-six medals.

Auburndale senior Danica Harrison finished 10th in the 1,600 meters in 5:25.83. She finished eighth in the 3,200 on Friday.

The same Columbus girls relay team of Roehl, Stratman, Selz and Heiman finished 10th in the 400 relay (51.66) and Heiman took ninth in the 100 (13.13).

The Dons boys 3,200 relay team of David Cleveland, Eric Anderson, Tyler Derfus and Travis Wienke ended up 14th in 8:34.92.

For Stratford, Temanson took eighth in the 200 (22.91) and Jacob Zuelke was 14th in the 3,200 (10:30.67).

Team champions for the boys were Brookfield East in Division 1, Belleville/New Glarus in Division 2 and Edgar in Division 3. Edgar edged Marawood Conference rival Marathon by just ½ point for the team title.

Girls team champions were Milwaukee Riverside University in Division 1, La Crosse Aquinas in Division 2, and Edgar in Division 3.
