Auburndale girls basketball tops Wausau Newman Catholic

WAUSAU – The Auburndale girls basketball team completed a season sweep over Wausau Newman Catholic, downing the Cardinals 44-37 Friday night at Newman Catholic High School.

The Apaches improve to 10-5 and 7-2 in the Marawood South after beating Newman for the second time this season. Newman drops to 8-6 and 4-3 in the conference.

Auburndale trailed 31-27 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Cardinals 17-6 over the final 8 minutes.

“I was proud of the way the girls held their composure in the last few minutes of play,” Auburndale coach Liz Nagel said. “(Emma) Steines and (Shannon) Yahnke hit some key shots and had a couple of key offensive rebounds.”

Nicole Nikolay and Yahnke each had 12 points and Steines added 11 for the Apaches. Yahnke had a team-high nine rebounds, while Nikolay had eight and Mikayla Jankowski had seven. Auburndale held a 39-17 rebounding advantage.

Auburndale hosts Abbotsford in a nonconference game Monday night.
