MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point started the game on a 17-0 run and never looked back, dominating a depleted Marshfield squad 59-40 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball game on Tuesday night at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.

Marshfield missed its first nine shot attempts while Point made 7 of 12 to start the game and pulled out to the big lead.

The Tigers got as close as nine midway through the third quarter after outscoring Stevens Point 9-2 to start the period, but the Panthers recovered and built the lead back up to 19 with 2 minutes left in the fourth.

After two free throws and a basket by Ellie Kummer started the second quarter on a positive note for the Tigers, cutting Stevens Point’s lead to 21-9, the Panthers scored 10 of the next 12 points. Heather Woyak ended the run with a basket and a 3-pointer to give Point a 31-11 lead. The Panthers led 35-19 at halftime.

SPASH shot 53 percent from the field (25 of 47), while the Tigers struggled, making just 15 of 47 shots.

With the victory, Stevens Point maintains its lead on top of the Wisconsin Valley Conference, improving to 7-1 and 11-5 overall. Marshfield falls to 9-7 and 3-5 in the Valley after suffering its second straight loss.
