GREENWOOD – The Spencer volleyball team lost its first two games of the conference season but was able to gut out a tough 3-2 win over Greenwood in a Cloverbelt East matchup Tuesday at Greenwood High School.

Spencer won 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10, to improve to 4-0 in the Cloverbelt East. Greenwood drops to 2-2.

Marisa Johnson had 25 kills and 36 digs, Tynae Phillips added 19 kills, Lindsey Vaughan led the defense with 40 digs and setter Brooke Kettleborough had 53 assists for Spencer.

“Greenwood pushed us hard tonight,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We started slow and I think we can blame some of that on homecoming week. We just kept attacking. Johnson and Phillips never let up. Even when mistakes came they stayed aggressive.”
