FOND DU LAC – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County men’s basketball team started its season with a second-place finish at the UW-Fond du Lac Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Marauders defeated UW-Fond du Lac 81-45 in the opening game Friday before falling in the championship game to Gogebic (Mich.) Community College 71-66 on Saturday.
Marshfield jumped out to a 43-23 lead by halftime of the opener and cruised to the big win.
Zach Zettler and Markus Kleifgen each scored 21 points, Tyler Johnson added 20 and Cale Weiler had 19 in the win for the Marauders. Kleifgen added a team-high 12 rebounds and five assists.
The title game was close throughout, with Gogebic leading 37-34 at halftime and winning by five.
The Marauders were hurt by 19 offensive rebounds from Gogebic, which resulted in 21 second-chance points.
Kleifgen scored 19 points, Johnson had six 3-pointers and scored 18, and Weiler added 16 for Marshfield.
The Marauders are back in action at Western Technical College in La Crosse of Wednesday.
