Three Stratford wrestlers, another from Auburndale, win medals Saturday at 2014 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament

MADISON – Stratford won three medals and Auburndale grabbed another on Saturday afternoon at the 2014 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

Sam Wenzel (23-13) defeated Dylan Altmann of Auburndale 5-3 in a consolation match before losing to Nick Burns of La Crosse Aquinas 6-0 in the third-place match to take fourth for Stratford in the Division 3 106-pound bracket. Burns defeated Wenzel in a quarterfinal on Friday.

Altmann (23-13) lost the fifth-place match to Austin Wolfe of Boyceville 15-1 to finish sixth in the tournament. Wolfe knocked Altmann into the consolation bracket with a win the quarterfinals on Friday.

Stratford’s Kamren Bornbach (42-6) lost a 182-pound consolation semifinal to Henry Fielding of Shiocton 7-4, then went on to beat Greg Wenzel of Cedar Grove-Belgium 6-4 to take fifth place.

Anthony Gliniecki (43-5) of Stratford finished sixth at 113 pounds after losing twice in the consolation bracket Saturday. Gliniecki was pinned by Jordan Blanchard of Coleman in 33 seconds and lost 3-2 to Cal Hansen of Deerfield in the fifth-place match.

Two Stratford wrestlers will be going for state titles tonight. Alex Heiden (41-5) will take on KyleMezera (45-2) of Lancaster in the Division 3 126-pound championship match and Dondrick Tackes (34-1) will wrestle Nick Klein (40-10) of Random Lake for the 195-pound championship.

Championship matches in all three divisions begin at 7 p.m.
