Stratford scores nine runs in 7th, shocks Spencer in WIAA Division 3 softball regional semifinal

SPENCER – The Stratford softball team made an improbable comeback to beat Spencer and roll into the regional finals.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs and no one on base in the top of the seventh inning, Stratford scored nine runs to best the Rockets 11-3 in a WIAA Division 3 softball regional semifinal Tuesday at Spencer High School.

Stratford (12-7) will play the winner of Marathon and Loyal/Granton in a regional final on Thursday. Loyal/Granton plays at Marathon on Wednesday in a regional semifinal. The game was postponed Tuesday.

Lorrie Lupeke, Liz Krum, Brittany Bredemann and Macie Frueh each had two hits for the Tigers. Luepke drove in three runs and Krum and Bredemann each had two RBIs.

Macie Weber walked eight and allowed nine runs, only three of which were earned, in 6 2/3 innings, for Spencer. Tynae Phillips gave up two runs before getting the final out in the seventh.

Krum earned the win, allowing five walks, eight hits and three runs in a complete-game effort.

Brooke Kettleborough, Phillips and Mandie Schultz each had two hits for the Rockets (15-7).
