WAUSAU – Marshfield avenged an early-season loss by knocking off Wausau West 3-1 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Thursday at West High School.

The Tigers have now won five games in a row to improve to 6-4-2 overall and 5-2 in the WVC. West, which beat Marshfield 5-2 in the conference opener on Sept. 1, is now 5-6 and 3-4 in the Valley.

Leo Steiner scored 12:54 into the game to give Marshfield a lead it would never relinquish.

Collin Nikolai added a goal in the 29th minute and Hunter McManus scored with 12:39 remaining in the game for the Tigers.

Mathias Holm had 11 saves to earn the victory in goal for Marshfield.

“West played hard and has a lot of speed,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “We were able to neutralize that and played a good game. The boys played hard. We created multiple, great scoring chances, so we really left a few goals out there.

“We still have potential to improve. It’s very exciting.”

Marshfield plays a nonconference game at Onalaska on Saturday.
