Bay Port holds off Marshfield girls basketball in battle of top-10 teams

MARSHFIELD – No. 3 Bay Port edged No. 9 Marshfield 44-41 in a battle of state-ranked girls basketball teams Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

Bay Port improves to 8-1 and hands Marshfield its first loss of the season as the Tigers drop to 7-1. Both teams were ranked in the top 10 in this week’s Wissports.net Division 1 state coaches poll.

Brooke Harris made 8 of 10 shots from the field and scored a game-high 17 points for the Pirates.

Marshfield led 21-20 at halftime and the score was tied at 28-28 before Bay Port used a run to take a 10-point lead midway through the second half.

The Tigers whittled the deficit to three late. After a missed free throw, Marshfield had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer but turned it over. Bay Port was able to dribble out the final seconds to preserve the win.

Meg Bryan had a season-high 13 points and Maddie Nikolai added 10 for the Tigers.

Marshfield will host its annual tournament on Dec. 29-30. Wausau Newman Catholic plays Rhinelander in the first semifinal at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, with Marshfield taking on Hudson at approximately 7:30 p.m. The third-place game will be at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 30, with the championship at 3:15 p.m. Both Marshfield games will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
