Columbus softball tops Auburndale at Assumption tourney

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic softball team scored two runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the fifth to beat former Marawood Conference rival Auburndale 11-8 in a game at the Royal Rumble Softball Tournament, hosted by Wisconsin Rapids Assumption High School on Saturday.

The Dons lost its second game to Royall 11-1 and stands at 4-7 on the season. Auburndale went 1-1 in its other two games, beating Royall 10-8 and losing to Gilman 10-0 to go to 5-12 this season.

In the win over Auburndale, Columbus jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one inning only to see the Apaches bounce back with four runs in the second to tie the game against Dons pitcher Katelyn Welsh.

Each team scored in the third before the Dons plated two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 10-7 lead.

Victoria Dieringer was 2-for-3 with a double and four runs scored for Columbus, which had five hits and took advantage of 16 walks. Olivia Larson and Haley Orella each scored twice for the Dons.

Kayla Kundinger was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Auburndale.

Columbus managed just four hits in the loss to Royall, with Orella having a hit and scoring the only run for the Dons.

Auburndale trailed 8-7 against Royall before scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead. Bailee Krajnik slammed the door in the seventh to finish off the win. She struck out six and walked two.

Kayla Gotz scored three runs and Stacy Brokish had two RBIs for the Apaches in the victory.

Against Gilman, Auburndale pitchers walked 12 and allowed just two hits in the five-inning shutout loss.

Kundinger was 2-for-3 to account for half of Auburndale’s hits

Columbus hosts Owen-Withee on Monday at the Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.
