RHINELANDER – Rhinelander scored the game’s first two goals and held off Marshfield 3-1 in a WIAA Division 2 girls soccer regional final on Saturday night.

Alayna Bronson scored 5:14 into the game and Rhinelander pushed it to 2-0 with a goal by Sydney Zettler early in the second half.

Marshfield’s Julia Urban scored off an assist from Maddie Haessly in the 59th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Tigers couldn’t get another one past Hodags’ goalkeeper Brianna DeNaumur, who had six saves.

Anna Sturzl added a goal with 13:14 left to pad Rhinelander’s lead.

Rhinelander moves on to a sectional semifinal Thursday at Pulaski.

Andrea Carolfi had 10 saves in goal for Marshfield, which finishes the season with a 6-17-1 record.

“The team played hard right to the end of the game,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We’re proud of the efforts overall by the entire team. It has been a trying year as far as wins go, but the team did some amazing things and really progressed along these last few weeks.

“The seniors (Mikayla Scheuer, Francesca Tyler, Olivia Haessly, Alexis Langteau, Patty Bloczynski, Mardi Dietz, and Julia Urban), who played their last Tiger game, can be proud of their play this year.”
