Stratford tops Spencer in championship match at Auburndale Volleyball Invitational

AUBURNDALE – Stratford won all six of its matches, four in straight sets, to capture the title at the Auburndale Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at Auburndale High School.

The Tigers beat Mosinee 26-24, 25-16; Stevens Point Pacelli 26-24, 25-19; Marshfield Columbus Catholic 26-24, 26-28, 16-14; Pittsville 25-21, 25-11; and Prentice 25-11, 25-16; to reach the championship match where they beat Spencer 20-25, 25-15, 15-13, in a tight, three-set match.

McKayla Krall had 31 digs and 48 kills to lead Stratford in both categories. Mazie Nagel added 42 kills, 16 service aces, and 30 digs, and Katie Krueger had 27 digs for the Tigers.

Spencer won its first five matches in straight sets to reach the championship against Stratford.

The Rockets beat Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 25-22, 25-17; Auburndale 25-17, 25-20; Prentice 25-12, 25-13; Iola-Scandinavia 25-18, 25-12; and Stevens Point Pacelli 25-19, 25-20.

Liz Endreas had 36 kills and Jenna Schober added 35 for the Rockets. Sadie Mercier had 61 assists and seven aces, McKenzie Bainer had 54 assists, and Jenna Rogers had 52 digs for Spencer.

“It was a very solid day for us,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Losing the title game to a solid team like Stratford is something we can build on. All 12 girls contributed well all day.

Auburndale finished 2-3, beating Iola-Scandinavia and Assumption, and losing to Spencer, Prentice and Columbus Cahtolic.

Mackenzie Raab had 79 assists, 20 digs and six service aces, Cindy Jensen had 33 kills, and Brooke Anderson had 65 digs for the Apaches.

Columbus Catholic also finished 2-3. In addition to the loss to Stratford and beating Auburndale 18-25, 25-14, 15-8, the Dons beat Pittsville 25-15, 25-20, and lost to Mosinee 22-25, 25-18, 15-11, and Pacelli 25-22, 25-8.

Jennifer Reigel had 70 assists and 44 digs, Kendra Baierl tallied 76 kills, Celine Scholin added 38 kills, and Sierra Litwatis had a team-high 55 digs for Columbus.

All four local teams return to conference action next week. Auburndale is at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Stratford is at Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday in Marawood South matchups. Columbus Catholic hosts Neillsville on Tuesday and Spencer is at Loyal on Thursday in Cloverbelt East matches.
