Columbus Catholic soccer blanks Newman, wins ninth-straight conference game

WAUSAU – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team held Wausau Newman Catholic without a shot attempt and cruised to a 6-0 win over the Cardinals on Monday in Mid-State Soccer Conference action.

Six different Dons scored in the shutout win as they improve to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the MSSC. Newman drops to 1-10 and 1-8 in the conference.

Columbus hosts Chippewa Falls McDonell/Eau Claire Regis at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park. With a victory, the Dons would clinch at least a share of the Mid-State title.

Nadim Torbey scored 13:03 into the game to put Columbus up early, and Evan Dieringer and Alex Giles added goals to put the Dons up 3-0 at halftime.

Noah Hansen, Charles Payant and Nick Malovrh scored in the second half to double Columbus’ advantage.

Columbus outshot Newman 16-0 on goal.
